Janelle Monáe Performs “Tightrope” For President Obama
Tuesday, January 17th, 2012At a recent campaign event for President Obama in Chi-town, Ms. Monáe performed her 2010 single “Tightrope” (sans Big Boi) and expressed her support for a second term for President Obama in 2012.
“I was deeply honored to be invited by the president to perform at the rally in Chicago at the University of Illinois,” said the 26-year-old Kansas native. “It was an amazing feeling to be amongst so many people, young and old, black, white, red, disabled, all united, eager to help support a man who has ended the war in Iraq, gotten rid of ‘don’t ask don’t tell’—allowing anyone to serve this country regardless of who you love—made sure women were not paid less than men merely because they are women, doubled pell grants, given 2.5 million young people health insurance, and has created a law that recognizes that crimes based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or disability aren’t just any crime—they’re hate crimes that deserve justice.”
World Aids Day 2011: The Beginning Of The End Of Aids
Thursday, December 1st, 2011Every year since 1988, December 1st has been observed as World Aids Day. It is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Today we can celebrate that deaths are down, and a cure is in sight. ABC reports that In 2002 only 300,000 people were on antiretroviral treatments. In 2010 more than 6.5 million people are on the lifesaving medication.
Last year, Celebs joined Alicia Keys’ Keep A Child Alive organization to help raise awareness for the day, buy quitting social networking. This year, Alicia & Bono are among those in D.C. to talk to Presidents Obama, Clinton and Bush about what’s next in the battle against AIDS. You can watch that LIVE right here, courtesy of ONE.
As much as it is a blessing, celebrity influence should never be a determining factor on each of us as individuals getting behind this cause. Let’s start by getting tested, not only today, but all year round. UNAIDS has created a strategy for “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths,” by 2015, God Willing.
